Simple tips to reactivate voice sound on your Mappy app

The Mappy app uses the phone’s text-to-speech (TTS) engine to announce GPS navigation instructions. When the sound disappears, the issue rarely lies within Mappy itself: it comes from the system volume, Bluetooth configuration, or an incomplete TTS setting.

Bluetooth and hands-free kit: the most common cause of silent Mappy sound in the car

The majority of reports of lost voice sound on Mappy occur in the car. Once connected to the vehicle, the phone redirects the audio stream to the hands-free kit or car radio. If the Bluetooth channel dedicated to telephony (HFP) takes precedence over the multimedia channel (A2DP), the voice instructions are sent over a channel that the car radio does not listen to.

Several voice navigation troubleshooting guides confirm that sound can switch to a Bluetooth device without the user noticing. The phone’s speaker then remains silent, and the car radio receives nothing either, because the audio priority is misallocated.

To verify this hypothesis, simply temporarily disable the phone’s Bluetooth during navigation. If the voice returns through the internal speaker, the problem is confirmed. You can also check the Système Auto website for a summary of audio settings related to vehicle connection.

In some vehicles, the car radio enforces a single audio source. When a phone call ends, the system does not automatically switch back to the navigation stream. Turning off and then reconnecting Bluetooth, or forcing audio output to the phone’s speaker in the Bluetooth settings, resolves the issue in most cases.

Mappy speaker icon: three states to know

The Mappy navigation interface displays a speaker icon whose state determines what the phone is broadcasting. There are three distinct modes:

  • Speaker with a line through it (sound off): no voice instructions, no alert signals. Navigation remains visual only.
  • Speaker with an exclamation mark: only alert signals (speed camera, accident, danger zone) are announced. Direction instructions remain silent.
  • Full speaker (sound on): all navigation instructions and alert signals are broadcast.

An accidental tap on this icon while driving is enough to mute the sound. Before changing other settings, checking the state of the speaker icon during navigation should be the first reflex to adopt.

Android and iOS multimedia volume: the setting that Mappy does not control

Mappy does not manage the overall volume of the phone. The app sends the audio signal to the system, and the system broadcasts it according to its own volume level. On Android, the volume is divided into several separate channels: ringtone, notifications, multimedia, alarm. The multimedia channel is the one that affects the GPS voice.

Increasing the volume with the physical buttons during a call adjusts the telephony channel, not the multimedia channel. To adjust the correct slider, you need to press a volume button and then expand the full slider panel (the small arrow under the main slider on Android).

Adjusting volume during active navigation

The official Mappy help page specifies to check the sound volume during navigation, not before. The reason is technical: some Android configurations reserve a different sound profile when a navigation app is in the foreground. Pressing the volume buttons while the navigation screen is active ensures that you are acting on the correct channel.

On iOS, the volume is unified, but the silent mode (physical switch on the left side of the iPhone) mutes the text-to-speech without displaying a notification on the screen. A simple toggle of this switch can restore the sound.

Missing TTS voice or in a foreign language on Android

Mappy uses the synthesized voice installed at the operating system level. If no French voice is downloaded, or if the default voice is set to another language, the app cannot announce the instructions. It remains silent without an error message.

On Android, the setting is found in Settings, then System, then Language and input, then Text-to-speech. Two elements matter:

  • The selected TTS engine (Google TTS is pre-installed on most devices, Samsung TTS on Galaxy).
  • The voice language: it must match French. If only an English voice is installed, you need to download the French voice pack in the TTS engine settings.
  • The speech rate: a rate set to minimum can give the impression that the voice is not working, as the sentences are spaced several seconds apart.

On iOS, the guidance voice depends on the VoiceOver setting accessible in Settings, then General, then Accessibility, then VoiceOver, then Speech, then Default Dialect. This path allows you to choose French from France or another Francophone variant.

Testing the TTS voice without opening Mappy

In the Android text-to-speech settings, a “Listen to example” button allows you to check that the voice is working. If no sound comes out at this stage, the problem lies at the system level, not with Mappy. Reinstalling the TTS engine or downloading a new voice pack usually resolves the situation.

Restarting and permissions: the final checkpoints

After changing a volume, Bluetooth, or TTS voice setting, relaunching Mappy (closing and then reopening the app) is necessary for the changes to take effect. A simple return to the home screen is not enough: you need to close the app from the task manager.

On some Android devices, app permissions may block audio output. Check in Settings, then Apps, then Mappy, that the app has permission to access the microphone (useful if voice search is enabled) and that no battery restrictions limit its background operation.

If the sound still does not return after these checks, uninstalling and then reinstalling Mappy forces a reset of all internal app settings. The saved routes and favorites linked to the Mappy account are kept on the server and synchronize upon reconnection.

Mappy voice guidance depends on three distinct layers: the internal app setting (speaker icon), the system volume of the phone (multimedia channel), and the audio output configuration (internal speaker or Bluetooth). Addressing these three layers in order prevents searching for a software bug where a simple volume slider is at fault.
